Indeed’s Industry Employment Trends provide a perspective on the job market nationwide and the new data we just released for January 2010 is a promising indicator of what’s to come. This is the first time job postings have increased for half of the major industries since we introduced Industry Trends a year ago.

This time last year, the number of job postings had been declining in every major industry and since then this trend has persisted for most industries. However, the January 2010 data turned that on its head: six major industries (Education, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Media and Newspaper, Real Estate and Retail) now show an increase in the number of job postings compared to this time last year.

Real Estate is one industry that has bounced back remarkably. In January 2009 there was a 58% decrease in the number of job postings compared to the previous year and now Real Estate shows positive growth with 16% more job postings than a year ago.

You can stay up-to-date with the changing trends by checking our Industry Employment Trends each month.

This has been a brutal year for the job market, with unemployment higher than we’ve seen in decades. But there are signs of recovery. Four major industries had more job listings in November than a year ago: education grew 38%, hospitality 20%, retail 17% and real estate 4%. And there are micro-segments that are growing even faster.

Here are the 10 fastest growing opportunities of 2009:

1.	Twitter
2.	Cloud Computing
3.	iPhone
4.	Facebook
5.	Corporate Social Responsibility
6.	Blogger
7.	Pediatrician
8.	Hospitalist
9.	Social Media
10.	Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)

The emergence of social media opportunities is striking, with Twitter being the #1 growth trend along with Facebook (#4), Blogger (#6), and Social Media (#9). Other strong technology-related trends are Cloud Computing at #2 and iPhone at #3.

This year’s episodes of financial malfeasance have boosted the demand for Corporate Social Responsibility experts (#5). Healthcare hasn’t grown as an industry recently, but fast-growing pockets include Pediatrician (#7), Hospitalist (#8), and Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) (#10).

We’ll continue to report the top job trends in the New Year, so let us know if there are any you want us to track and good luck in your job search.

We’ve just released our Job Postings Per Capita index for the UK. The 15 most populous urban areas are ranked by the number of job postings for every thousand people during the month of November 2009. The map illustrates the data: the bigger the dot, the more job postings there are per capita.

Job Postings per Capita is a measure of job competition. Lower ranked areas have fewer jobs available per person and more competition for each job. Glasgow and Belfast are at the bottom, with only four job postings per thousand people.

London is the #1 job creator with 18 job postings per thousand people. With over four times as many open positions per capita as Glasgow and Belfast, it tends to be a lot easier to find a job in London.

The top five urban areas are:
London
Bristol
Liverpool
Nottingham
Sheffield

Our Job Postings per Capita index should be helpful in deciding where to look for opportunities. Try our job search and don’t forget to set up daily job alert emails!

Providing the best job search experience increasingly means providing the best mobile job search experience. So we’re pleased that our iPhone app, Job Search, is the #1 business application in the App Store! Job Search is the most popular application for the iPhone and iPod Touch to find jobs, and it’s free.

Based on feedback we’ve received, we’ve made it even easier to find what every job seeker wants: new job postings. Recent searches show the number of jobs added since your last visit. Just tap on a recent search, or tap the “new” button on our search results page to see the jobs added since the last time you checked.

We’ll continue improving our iPhone application and mobile websites so you can find a great job whether you’re sitting at a desk or sitting on the bus. We keep an eye on our comments and ratings in the App Store so let us know how we’re doing. If you don’t already have our application, download Job Search or tell a friend about it. Indeed also provides mobile job search for Blackberry and other mobile users.

We’ve just released a Job Market Competition index, which compares the number of unemployed to the number of job postings in the biggest 50 cities in the US. The more unemployed there are per job opening, the more competition there is in the job market and the harder it is to find a job.

Washington DC has by far the least competition for jobs and so is relatively better for the unemployed, with a whopping six job openings for every unemployed person. Federal government stimulus is clearly working for DC, but is it working in the rest of the country? Apparently not for Detroit, at the opposite end of the scale, with an atrocious 18 unemployed for every job opening.

The best five job markets are:
•	Washington, DC
•	Jacksonville, FL
•	Baltimore, MD
•	Salt Lake City, UT
•	New York, NY

and the worst five are:
•	Portland, OR
•	Los Angeles, CA
•	Riverside, CA
•	Miami, FL
•	Detroit, MI

See our ranking of all 50 cities which also shows how each city’s rank has changed since the previous month. Relatedly, our Job Postings per Capita map compares the number of job postings with the total population of these cities.

We’ll be updating the Job Market Competition index monthly, so you can track which parts of the country give you the best chance of finding a job.

With Indeed, there’s not a lot of hands-on work involved – the candidates just come. You push a button, set the budget and it’s done.

This got us thinking – why not show how pay-per-click recruitment advertising on Indeed works, and how easy it is for a company to sponsor its jobs? The video below provides an overview and how to get started:
