Providing the best job search experience increasingly means providing the best mobile job search experience. So we’re pleased that our iPhone app, Job Search, is the #1 business application in the App Store! Job Search is the most popular application for the iPhone and iPod Touch to find jobs, and it’s free.

Based on feedback we’ve received, we’ve made it even easier to find what every job seeker wants: new job postings. Recent searches show the number of jobs added since your last visit. Just tap on a recent search, or tap the “new” button on our search results page to see the jobs added since the last time you checked.

We’ll continue improving our iPhone application and mobile websites so you can find a great job whether you’re sitting at a desk or sitting on the bus. We keep an eye on our comments and ratings in the App Store so let us know how we’re doing. If you don’t already have our application, download Job Search or tell a friend about it. Indeed also provides mobile job search for Blackberry and other mobile users.

We’ve just released a Job Market Competition index, which compares the number of unemployed to the number of job postings in the biggest 50 cities in the US. The more unemployed there are per job opening, the more competition there is in the job market and the harder it is to find a job.

Washington DC has by far the least competition for jobs and so is relatively better for the unemployed, with a whopping six job openings for every unemployed person. Federal government stimulus is clearly working for DC, but is it working in the rest of the country? Apparently not for Detroit, at the opposite end of the scale, with an atrocious 18 unemployed for every job opening.

The best five job markets are:
•	Washington, DC
•	Jacksonville, FL
•	Baltimore, MD
•	Salt Lake City, UT
•	New York, NY

and the worst five are:
•	Portland, OR
•	Los Angeles, CA
•	Riverside, CA
•	Miami, FL
•	Detroit, MI

See our ranking of all 50 cities which also shows how each city’s rank has changed since the previous month. Relatedly, our Job Postings per Capita map compares the number of job postings with the total population of these cities.

We’ll be updating the Job Market Competition index monthly, so you can track which parts of the country give you the best chance of finding a job.

This got us thinking - why not show how pay-per-click recruitment advertising on Indeed works, and how easy it is for a company to sponsor its jobs? The video below provides an overview and how to get started:

Today we released Industry Trends, a picture of job posting numbers and job seeker traffic in 12 major industries over the last year in the US. If you are working in a rapidly declining industry, it will help you identify industries in better shape to which you can try to transition. If you are a recruiter, it will help you manage your recruitment advertising campaigns: you can monitor job seeker traffic in your industry and see which job titles, keyword searches and cities are getting the most clicks. Our press release is here.

Indeed’s jobs data are an alternative to government payroll statistics, offering a more forward-looking insight into hiring activity. If government data show the job market in the rear-view mirror - jobs that have been created or lost - Indeed’s Industry Trends provide a view through the front windscreen: job openings that companies intend to fill.

Our data show that compared with a year ago the number of job postings in the US has declined in all industries, while Education and Healthcare have declined the least. Job seeker traffic grew strongly in all industries; Education, Construction and Healthcare grew the most, experiencing a doubling of clicks in the last year.

Our job data are directionally similar to the government’s payroll numbers. Labor Department data for January 2009 show that Education, Healthcare and Government were the only sectors to grow in the last year, adding 743,000 jobs since December 2007. The US economy as a whole lost 3.6 million jobs.

The decline in job postings in the last year has been much steeper than the decline in overall jobs; the net loss of jobs in the economy is just one of several causes of job posting decline. People are switching jobs less often due to job insecurity, so job openings created by employee churn are far fewer. Also, employers are posting open positions less frequently to job boards because of a greater supply of candidates in the market.

The outpouring of bad news in the media about layoffs continues unabated. The New York Times reports today that companies across the board are resorting to mass job cuts.

But this belies myriad opportunities: hundreds of thousands of companies are continuing to hire. While big layoffs are headline-grabbing, gradual hiring in sometimes hidden corners of the economy often goes unnoticed by the media.

Use Indeed’s job search to ferret out the jobs that fit your own background and our job trends to see which jobs are in demand. If the industry you’re in is struggling, find where you can deploy your skills in areas of the economy that are growing.

Try looking for the silver lining amongst the clouds; foreclosure work, for example, is booming. Or seek out opportunities in new technologies like renewable energy that are likely to transform tomorrow’s economy.

The Times itself found one pocket of growth, noting here that “Indeed.com shows a thriving job market for MySQL and Linux developers.” Not only that, but demand for MySQL and Linux skills is also strongly rising.

Good luck in your job search and please let us know your job search success stories.

At Indeed, our number-one priority is the job seeker experience - making sure our users have the most comprehensive job search in existence, that our results are as fresh and relevant as possible, and the jobs in our index are real, open opportunities.

This approach also benefits our clients, who sponsor their jobs on Indeed for targeted job seeker traffic and qualified applications to their jobs. While we hear from job seekers all the time about their Indeed experiences, we also hear from our clients about how sponsored jobs are an easy, effective way to meet their recruitment advertising objectives. Here are some recent comments from our client case studies:

We hired five engineers in the first three months through Indeed. We were trying to hire for specific, hard-to-fill positions, and sponsoring jobs on Indeed delivered.
General Dynamics C4 Systems

Indeed was the best solution to get the greatest amount of visibility with the least amount of effort. We were looking for an Organizational Development Manager for just over a year, and filled the job within the first three months of sponsoring jobs on Indeed.
Intermountain Healthcare

It is extremely easy to sponsor jobs on Indeed and gain national exposure to top candidates. It is amazing just how qualified Indeed job seekers are - we were expecting to receive candidates for some of our easier-to-fill job openings and ended up hiring a Certified Cytotechnologist and a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.
Tuality Healthcare

We thank these companies and all our hundreds of clients using Indeed.
