Indeed Interactive Day One Highlights: Indeed Partners with Goodwill, “Crazy Rich Asians” Author Kevin Kwan on Fostering Creativity and More

On Tuesday, over 1800 talent leaders from across the country gathered to join us at the Austin Convention Center in downtown Austin, Texas, to learn how to solve “The Talent Equation.”

This year, there are 12 keynotes and more than 100 speakers spread across 70 breakouts — not to mention a fantastic lineup of speakers on the main stage. Up above, you’ll see a little of what star speaker and Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan had to share with us. Here’s a little more of what he had to say: 

And there was so much more. In fact, it’s impossible to document all the action, but here are some highlights from day one.

On the main stage

First, we were lucky enough to catch up with Indeed CEO Chris Hyams to learn a little about what the Talent Equation meant for him:

Then Carmen Bryant, Director of US Marketing was joined by Daniel Wahlen, Senior Manager of Employer Insights, who had traveled all the way from Dusseldorf, Germany to help host proceedings. Indeed SVP Paul D’Arcy delivered the first keynote on the main stage by exploring what it takes for candidates to choose your company, with a deep dive into the relationship between work, identity and how we choose our workplaces.

He also shared new research on the variables that drive job seeker decision-making and explored how brands — both employer and otherwise —  play a role in a candidate’s final choice.

Meanwhile, we were lucky enough to hear from Sheena Iyengar, professor at Columbia Business School and best-selling author of “The Art of Choosing,” as she gave an insightful talk about the art and science behind how individuals make choices and the less-obvious factors that influence a job seeker’s decision-making. She also shared a few thoughts with us:

Chief Economist at Indeed Jed Kolko followed with his keynote titled “What Happens When the Good Times End?” “Economists are not very good at predicting recessions,” Jed quipped. “…and everyone else is worse.” Even so he explored the question of whether we will face continued prosperity or an impending recession, how worried we should be and how talent professionals should think about the future in a fascinating, data-packed session.

In Hello from the Other Side, a panel of job seekers told tales of career transformations. From autoplant worker to ER nurse, or PhD neuroscientist to sales manager, and coach to mental counsellor, the audience listened to inspiring true stories of radical career changes — and received encouragement to take a chance on unconventional hires in their own careers.

Senior Recruitment Evangelist Lauren Kort explored the highs and lows of a job candidate’s experience and offered strategies to improve the quality of each job seeker’s interactions with your company. Chip Borsi, Manager of Retail Marketing at Indeed, discussed the latest retail talent trends and predictions for the future of the industry.

Lead Learning Experience Facilitator Vaishali Jadhav and Learning Experience Facilitator Michelle Cook explored emotional intelligence in a hands-on workshop where attendees walked away with insightful strategies for leveraging emotional intelligence to more effectively communicate and build relationships in the workplace.

Recruitment Evangelist Erica Pepe addressed the often overlooked process of onboarding and shared the latest research on how a strong onboarding program elevates your brand and improves retention. Her number-one tip? “Encourage new hires to be their authentic selves and create a sense of belonging by providing an opportunity for them to make an immediate impact.”

Indeed announces partnership with Goodwill

In the afternoon, CEO of Indeed Chris Hyams spoke about some exciting new developments in Indeed’s product suite, and then introduced Steven C. Preston, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. Together they announced a commitment to helping one million job seekers around the world find employment over the next five years.

Goodwill Industries International, North America’s leading workforce development provider, will serve as a strategic partner in this effort in the U.S. and Canada.

“Together with Indeed, we believe we can help companies discover that their next great hire may not have a traditional background or career path, but that person has the skills and qualifications needed to make positive contributions,” said Steven C. Preston, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International.

Indeed and Goodwill plan to identify solutions to help job seekers who are overlooked or face barriers to finding work. Some of these solutions will include skill-based assessments, employer hiring events and job seeker supports. We’ll have more on the partnership with Goodwill soon, so stay tuned.

The variety of booths in the Indeed Works area offered many opportunities to learn about Indeed’s different products.

Product Manager Rob Fabianski and Global Product Marketing Manager Sherrie Nguyen talked about the importance of building a targeted strategy that delivers the right message to the right candidate at the right time and explained how to use targeted advertising to do this. The best part about it? “Targeted advertising puts you in control and gets your message in front of the audience you want to hire,” said Sherrie.

At the Featured Employer booth, Recruitment Evangelist Travis Stiba and Senior Client Success Specialists Jessica Macdonald and Matthew Kaplon described how making one big change — becoming a Featured Employer — can give you all the tools you need to stand out on Indeed, including exclusive access to your key labor market, as well as other benefits such as sourcing and branding.

Meanwhile, Marketing Manager Janeane Tolomeo and Product Marketing Manager Sarah Eadie explored tangible steps for employers to strengthen their employer brands by introducing two solutions: Indeed Company Pages and Top-Rated Workplace Awards. Top-Rated Workplace winners also stopped by the booth to pick up a custom celebratory gift from Indeed, and aspiring winners received insights on how to work toward their recognition and become a Top-Rated Workplace.
