Industry focus – best places to work in retail

Retail job postings in the U.S. have increased 15% since the start of 2012, and despite declines in early summer, employers’ postings have risen steadily over the last three months. Retail saw 6% job posting growth in October, the largest month-over-month increase of any industry.

With seasonal hiring in full swing, now is a great time to find a job in retail. But where should you look? Companies with highly satisfied employees are a great place to start.

Best Places to Work in Retail

The rankings below are based on reviews posted by current and former employees on Indeed’s Company Pages. With over 1 million reviews to date, Company Pages are the largest source of employer reviews in the world.

The top 15 companies were rated highest by their employees on measures such as:

  • Compensation/Benefits
  • Management
  • Job Security/Advancement
  • Culture
  • Work/Life Balance

It’s interesting to see the variety of retailers represented on the list. Halloween City, for example, received high marks on job culture and work/life balance. Employees appreciate the flexibility of the company’s seasonal positions and enjoy the fun work environment.

At Apple, the best place to work in retail, store employees operate in a unique retail environment – part technology showroom and part educational center. Employees love the company’s creative culture and the opportunities to solve technology challenges for their customers. Here’s a sampling of what Apple employees have to say about working there:

 Fast pace, stimulating environment

Specialist (Current Employee), New York, NY

On any given day I am a student, teacher, salesman, friend, consultant, and technician to our customers. While at the same time I am a key resource to my co-workers and an exemplary model of the Apple brand and its core values.

Enjoyable and fun place with great people to work with
Expert (Lead) Business Support (Current Employee), Braintree, MA

A typical day at work is the most enjoyable that I have had compared to anywhere else. Finding solutions, teaching prospective owners how Apple Technology is life changing. Unbelievable support from co-workers and management team.

Getting started with your Indeed Resume

“A recruiter found me via Indeed.com. I got a job even better than the one I was searching for. I had my resume posted and that’s all it took.” – BB in Huntington Beach, California

Whether you’re actively looking for a new job or simply open to hearing about new opportunities, having a professional presence online is more important than ever. Just as people use Indeed to search for jobs, thousands of recruiters and hiring managers use Indeed Resume to search for, and connect with, prospective hires. With an Indeed Resume you can make your skills and experience visible to employers and give them an easy way to contact you about relevant jobs.

So let’s take a look at creating an Indeed Resume, and see what you can do with it.

Get started by posting your resume

Click the ‘post resume’ link at the top of any page on Indeed and create a free my.Indeed account or sign in with your existing account. If you already have a resume stored on your computer click ‘upload resume’ and attach your resume file.

No resume? No problem; click the ‘create a resume’ link to build your resume from scratch. Indeed’s resume editor makes it easy to enter your work experience, education, and skills.

Be found by employers

Indeed Resumes are visible to employers so that they can let you know about jobs you might be interested in. But Indeed keeps your private contact information safe -
employers searching on Indeed Resume will not see your personal phone number or email address; if employers decide to contact you, they must do so through the Indeed email system. Your contact information will only be shared when you choose to respond to an employer. If you apply to a job using your Indeed Resume, your contact details will be shared with that employer.

If you wish to keep your entire resume hidden – click the ‘edit resume’ button located to the right of your resume, then click the ‘edit privacy settings’ link (located to the right), then click ‘private’. You can change your resume’s visibility or remove it completely at any time. To remove your resume, click the ‘delete resume’ link within the edit privacy settings area.

Keep your resume up to date

Keeping your Indeed Resume current helps the most relevant employers find you. And when they do, they’ll be able to see your most recent accomplishments. Editing your resume is easy: just click ‘edit’ next to the existing section that you’d like to change, or click ‘Add section’ to add a new job title, school, or skill. Be sure to click ‘save’ when you’re finished.

You can access your resume at any time by signing in to your my.indeed account – simply click ‘sign in’ at the top of any page on Indeed and enter your credentials. Once signed in you’ll notice your email address displayed at the top of the page. Click your email and select ‘resume’ to access your Indeed Resume.
